2 Iron Street has a long storied history dating back to the late 19th century and well into the 20th century. It began its life in 1882 under the name of Canonsburg Iron Mill. It was the first industrial company in Canonsburg, PA, built in close proximity to the passenger rail station. In 1902 the company was renamed to Canonsburg Iron & Steel Works and mainly produced metal sheet goods. In 1920 they built two more mills (for a total of 8). The company produced sheet metal for automobiles, roofing, imitation brick, and stamped ceilings, etc.
Around 1931, continuous-strip milling made the rolling mill obsolete but the stamping department continued (corrugated roofing, etc.). The rolling mill closed before WWII but in 1943 the National Can Corporation took over the building to produce shells for the U.S. Navy. The building was closed in 1945 due to the ending of the war. It was then revived in 1946 by the Forbes Steel Company, specializing in the manufacture of welded wire fabric, reinforcing mesh, and flat steel washers.
Today, 2 Iron Street is undergoing a full renovation to produce high quality industrial warehouse space to the Washington County submarket. As of today, demolition of existing portions of the property is underway, and a phased approach will be taken to introduce approximately 15,000 sf, 40,000 sf and 100,000 sf over the course of the next three (3) years.
